Eerste Kerstdag. Zoals gewoonlijk staat de baas vroeg op om het ontbijt klaar te maken met een stevige pot koffie. Afijn, nog eens vijf minuten later werpt hij nogmaals een blik in de tuin en ziet daar een enorme rookwolk opstijgen. Brand! Concludeert hij. Tja, dat had ik hem vijf minuten geleden al willen zeggen, maar hij is nogal slecht in de hondentaal. En zoals dat dan gaat, voordeur open en concluderen dat er een auto in de fik staat … en even later: politie erbij, brandweer erbij … en ik moet zeggen, daar zijn mensen dan wel weer goed in: brandje blussen.

Eindresultaat: een gedeeltelijk afgebrande Volvo (gelukkig niet die van de baas) een fiets die nog steeds tegen de schutting stond en waarvan de eigenaar spoorloos was en de zekerheid dat een middenslag schnauzer (ik dus) schrander is, waakzaam is en zijn taak als verdediger van huis, tuin en de mensen van de roedel rustig aan mij kan worden overgelaten. Wel moet mijn baas nog leren serieus naar mij te luisteren als ik het sein ‘onveilig’ geef.
